The power of elevated simplicity in skincare

When I set out to make effective products to keep my eczema at bay, I didn’t expect to simultaneously find the solution to acne but that’s exactly what happened. Acne and eczema had always been a big issue for me but at some point, the eczema began to take over and it’s what truly made me look for a solution. Anybody who suffers from eczema know how painful it is and having it in your face plays with your self-esteem far more than what words can describe. The embarrassment of having it was my biggest motivation into creating products that are safe enough to be used not only when you have a rash but as maintenance when you don’t, to keep your skin safe and sound. To my surprise, these products were not only helping me manage my eczema but somehow, they were helping me manage my other insecurity, acne. What stood out to me the most was the effect that elevated simplicity was having on my skin as I had never experienced that before. Actually, I had the mentality of more is better and I could not have been more wrong.

I know first-hand that just by simplifying your routine to elevated essentials will do a lot of good for your skin. That’s what I believe is the secret to some of the best skin we see, simplicity. Had I listened to my mother when I was a teen, I probably would have saved myself a lot of trouble. Ever see someone with great skin and ask them what it is they use, and the answer is always simple? That’s because they know not to mess with their skin barrier and as a consequence, they experience great skin. I remember one time asking a registered dietitian what skincare products she used as I noticed how great her skin was and she told me the simplest routine I would have never thought of and to take it even further she said she had never gotten a facial done with the exception of one time and she never went back. Her secret besides simple formulas that don’t mess with her barrier? Nutrition, sleep, movement, and mental/ emotional wellbeing.

I love skincare, I love a routine, but I also know that doing too much has always backfired, so I’ve learned to embrace simplicity and now I love my routine more than ever and as consequence I have a much healthier relationship with my skin. Is it perfect? No and I don’t expect it to be. I eat sugar, sometimes processed foods and some nights I don’t sleep that well and I think a piece of me has not entirely changed my habits because I’ve wanted to prove to myself the power of my formulas on their own with no assistance. For the record I do not get facials, so everything you see is simply the result of my routine. And trust me when I tell you this, I have always had complicated skin and reaching this place of peace and surrendering to my imperfections has been the best decision I have ever made, because now I know and live in the power of simplicity. I’m empowered in my own skin an know that the changes I’ll continue making in my life will only compliment all the goodness I already have. To me, simplicity is not boring, its true connection, its sophistication, it’s quiet but remarkable. It’s a lot like those great relationships we see that just seem to flow so well and you keep wondering “why am I not experiencing that?” The answer is because we often overcomplicate things. I see skincare as a metaphor of that. We do all these things in hopes of it working only to end up disappointed and sometimes worse than you were to begin with. So today I challenge you to take a good, hard look into your vanity and really ask yourself if what you have is truly what you need?
